Apraxia

We have continued to use the Hearit at Speech Pathology Service with the majority of our patients with communication disorders. It enhances their ability to self-correct and monitor their own speech patterns. It has been used successfully with apraxic children. It appears to help apraxic children to synthesize speech sounds together, which is quite a difficult task. We have also used the Hearit with our voice patients so they can monitor their loudness level.
As you can tell, we think the Hearit is a positive therapy tool at our clinic. We highly recommend its usage by other speech pathologists.

Articulation/Sustained Attention

As a Speech-Language Therapist in the public schools, my students are benefited daily by the Hearit tools we have purchased. I currently monitor the use of a Hearit with a neckloop for a student mainstreamed with a hearing impairment.

Collaboratively the teacher, student and myself determinethe most beneficial times for use in the academic day, including having the student use it during instruction in the Resource Room. Two other students are using Hearit SE during direct instruction, to facilitate sustained attention.

I use the tools during articulation treatment, and to treat voice and fluency disorders. A surprising by-product of the Broadcaster in classrooms, which tend to have less-than-adequate acoustices and active/noisy learners, has been decreased teacher vocal strain.

I am impressed with the durability and versatility of your product. The quality of care I can provice is enhanced by the use of Hearit tools.

Attention Deficit Disorder

Thank you for allowing me to try the Hearit device. It is really quite remarkable. I tried it with several college-age students with Attention Deficit Disorder. Each found it very helpful in screening out extraneous sounds and helping to focus their attention.
One student in particular used it as she read a complex article in a psychology journal aloud to herself. As she finished, she exclaimed, " I can tell you what I read. I understand it!" She could not believe that she had done that in one reading. Normally she finds it necessary to reread three or four times. Even though we created a distracting environment, she experienced success.
This is a fine and much needed device.

ADHD

Your Hearit device was of great assistance to a student in my behaviorally disordered group. This boy had been born with no ear on one side, and so missed much of what was happening in the class. Following instructions was very difficult for the boy.
I found that I could give directions from anywhere in our classroom and the child responded when wearing the HEARIT. It was a joy to be able, as a teacher, to speak to this child without the worry of "am I on the correct side?"
A more relaxed classroom atmosphere means a great deal to children who suffer from a disability which sets them apart from others. Your device helped my student "fit in." It helped him to focus, despite his ADHD.
Thank you for allowing us the chance to see the good results we could get for a student using this device!

ADHD

I attended CSUN this past March and visited the booth featuring your product. Thank you for sending the Hearit device for our department to try out.

We tried it out with a diverse group of children, including the following: severe phonological process impaired, ADHD, single phoneme errors, fluency case, and hearing problems (otitis media and effusion). The youngest child was 3 years old and the oldest was 13. The younger kids adapted to the use of the device the easiest. Since the older children weren't used to hearing this clearly, it bothered them. Given more time though, I believe the long term use of this device with the older children would have proved successful.

I would really suggest that you inform therapists that clients may initially find it annoying which is a perfectly normal response (just ask any hearing impaired person who wears aides). Emphasize that they need to stick with it in order to see the major league benefits!

There is indeed a lot of research out there on phonemic awareness that would substantiate the purchase of a unit like yours. I will certainly not hesitate to recommend your unit.

ADHD

Portage Public Schools and Southern Service Area Technology Committee would like to thank you and your company for the Telecommunication inservice and the loan of the Hearit SE Broadcaster and Trainer. We successfully completed our mutually agreed upon trial on March 7, 2001.

The Broadcast system was placed in a general education math classroom. The students were told that the system was on trial to see if it could help the teacher reduce the strain on her vocal cords. We didn't want the students to have a particular bias during the trial period. The seventh grade math class had 24 students, several diagnosed as ADHD, a general education and a special education support teacher. These students were observed prior to, and during the implementation of the system. The math teacher provided the first 10 minutes of instruction with the system turned off. She then turned it on for the remainder of the period. At the conclusion of the class, she asked the students inf they were able to hear more clearly and with less mental effort. Everyday, 100% of the students raised their hands to acknowledge "Yes."

There was a definite increase of on task behavior for the targeted students. The comparison student increased on task behavior to 100%. The general education teacher and special education teacher were thrilled with the positive effects on all of the students in the classroom. Needless to say, the teachers would like to have this system in their classrooms.

We are currently exploring several funding possibilities. We will contact you as soon as we have a source to purchase your system.

Again, we want to thank you very much for providing your services and helping to educate the educators!

ADHD, Otitis Media

I found many positive and helpful uses with the Hearit. It was particularly helpful for my very distracted, hyperactive students who typically have difficulty attending on any task for more than a few minutes. A child who suffers from chronic middle ear problems and fluctuating hearing loss was suddenly able to attend and comprehend directives and stories.

Articulation Errors

Thank you so much for the opportunity to try the Hearit with some of the kids in our Speech/Language caseload here at Campus West. My colleague, Rosemary Purdy, and I tried it with a few children and really liked the results.
Rosemary used it with a kindergarten child with several articulation errors. This child has a pattern of fronting, that is, producing k and g, which are normally produced in the back of the mouth, as t and d, respectively. He had quite a bit of difficulty with placement. With the Hearit, he was able to hear himself and self-correct, while practicing his sounds during therapy. It made a tremendous difference.
I had the same results with a second-grade boy who is working on s. The sound quality of the Hearit is so wonderful and clear, even on s! Before I tried the Hearit on him, I could not get an approximation of s.
I also used it on a girl with auditory processing problems, in addition to voice and articulation errors. She was quite comfortable using it and I really think it helped her to focus. She tends to lose track of what we're doing and I observed that she was paying closer attention. She has an Easy Listener, but there is just no comparison in the sound quality. The Hearit wins by a longshot. An it is just so much easier to use, since I didn't have to wear a microphone.
I think your products are wonderful and if I have the opportunity to do IEP equipment requisitions in the future for specific students, I will certainly keep you in mind.
Once again, many thanks for the use of the Hearit. It is a marvelous product.

Articulation

The following are comments our therapists are saying about the advantages and benefits they see when using the Hearit with their preschool and primary age students:

  • increased ability to focus their attention

  • some of the students were able to imitate sounds that they had not been able to imitate before (i.e. f, s, final consonants and blends.)

  • increased student interest in therapy, especially when the students were given a chance to use the microphone.

  • two students made significant progress in their ability to produce unvoiced final consonants (t, k) within just a few weeks when wearing the Hearit.

  • excellent sound quality of the Hearit compared to less expensive binaural amplifiers used previously

I only wish you could hear the enthusiasm in the voices of the SLPs who have had the chance to see what Hearit can do!

Attention Span, Phonological & Speech Delay

Thank you so much for the trial of the Hearit device. I have found it to be very beneficial for a preschool child with mild to moderate speech language delays, difficulty attending to task, and moderate to severe phonological delays. I have noticed an increase in attempts to produce sounds accurately within words as well as an increase in desire to imitate accurately my models of accurate production.
We have included Hearit on the top of the list of items to purchase for use with our children at the agency.

Autism

Thank you for the free trial of the Hearit device. I tried it with six different children and was pleased with the results. One of the students has a learning disability and a speech/language delay. I found that with the Hearit, his auditory discrimination in all three word positions improved. The second, third, and fourth students are non-verbal and have autistic tendencies. The second student just listened when the Hearit was on, but the third and fourth students initially vocalized more. The fifth student is minimally verbal and has autistic tendencies. He imitated the ends of words with greater accuracy when the Hearit was tried with him. The last student has verbal apraxia and is severely cognitively delayed. He also imitated the ends of words with greater accuracy.
Jean Schumacher, CCC-SLP, McLenegan Elementary School, Beloit, Wisconsin

I am an occupational therapist here at Enable, and I tried the Hearit with two children, separately. One is autistic, the other has attention and balance difficulties. Each child had only one opportunity to try the device, but in just one brief trial I witnessed some amazing things! Both readily engaged in auditory exploration, and the look on each face was as if they were hearing their own voice for the first time! Attention was significantly improved to verbal cues and directions in the case of the child with attention difficulties. Written information was provided to each family, as it was felt that further use may be beneficial.

Thank you for these trial periods. We have submitted for grant approval to purchase the Broadcaster and Trainer.

I appreciate your prompty mailing of the muliple information packets to me explaining your Hearit device. I do believe I will be sharing those packets with other families in my caseload based on my first recipient's response.

The State of Arizona approved a "Hearit" device for my client's use based on his high school speech therapist's recommendation and the case we built for need. The young adult user is moderately mentally retarded with autistic type behaviors, a seizure disorder andvery major medical disorders (high pain index). His mother is researching Landau-Kleffner Syndrome as she believes it describes her son.

The device was delivered last month and I did a home visit this month. What glowing good news!! Somehow the Hearit allows Paul to sort sound so he can converse beyond one word responses. After an initial lack of affinity for wearing the device, Paul now doesn't like to be without it.

This is pretty dramatically positive! Thank you for forging a new way into a very dense forest.

Down's Syndrome

Below are the SLP, Physician and Parent letters which support a successful Medicaid case:

Benjamin is a 13 year old male diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. he has been in my care for ear, nose and throat needs since February, 1987. Benjamin has a history of congestion, otitis media, and conductive hearing loss, which along with his primary diagnosis, affect his ability to communicate. Ben has been using a Hearit Original in the classroom for several months with great success. Not only has it provided Ben with numerous speech related benefits, it has also allowed him to communicate medical and safety needs verbally as well as respond to safety issues given him verbally.

I am writing on behalf of my student, Benjamin. Ben is a 13 year old male who has Down Syndrome and a conductive hearing loss.

For the past few months, he has been using a Hearit Original in the classroom for heightened auditory awareness. This device thas helped Ben by reducing distractions, increasing comprehension, and heightening phonological awareness. As a result, all of his care givers have noticed a marked improvement in his ability to concentrate and in his intelligibility. He is better able to express his medical needs directly and receive immediate attention.

I am requesting the purchase of the Hearit Original. We will have the support of the Speech Pathologist, Life Skills teacher, the Assistive Technology team, and very involved parents. His prognosis with this device is excellent and it will service him for many years to come.

I am seeking funding for an augmentative communication device called Hearit for my son Benjamin. I have seen him use this device at school and was very impressed with the benefits it provided. It really helps him to pay attention to his teacher and stay on task in his school work. It also enables him to participate in group discussions.

I was not prepared for all of the positive benefits of his hearing clearly (using Hearit). Ben was much more attentive to us and all the normal activities of daily living. He participated in family discussions and had much to contribute. He responded quickly and appropriately to requests and directives. The microphone that he wore around his neck not only magnified sound, it clarified it, enabling him to understand us better and to even distinguish which direction sounds came. It also enabled him to hear how his own voice sounds to others. He was able to correct the "mumbly" sounds he makes and to speak clearly.

I am glad Benjamin has the help he needs to be a successful student, but I am seeking the same hope of success in normal daily living. After testing the Hearit and seeing its benefits, I believe it is a medical necessity for Ben's functional daily living based on reasons of medical health benefits, mental health benefits and physical safety.

Hearing Impairment/Learning Disabilities/Otitis Media

I am very pleased with the Hearit and the quality of its sound upon amplification. I use it with a variety of speech and language disordered students. I actually have students argue over who gets to wear it on particular days.

I recently had a tragic but very powerful experience involving a ten year old multiple handicapped student that had just been identified as having a 70dB hearing loss. The tragedy was that this nonspeaking student's hearing loss had not been identified earlier. My first time with this student following the identification of the hearing loss, I decided to use the Hearit with him, since he did not have hearing aids and an FM system was not yet available. When I placed the headphones on his head and asked him if he could hear me, the scene that followed was like one from a movie. His eyes got huge, he reached for my face, and he smiled a giant smile. He then said "Mom." "Mom" is his one word and means love in a variety of ways. It brought tears to my eyes. He wore the Hearit for the entire day and would not part with it.

Otitis Media

It was exciting to use [Hearit] with one of my clients that was four years old. She had been going through several bouts with otitis media and middle ear effusion. Her mom was so pleased with the improvement in her ability to produce the target phonemes or sounds. The difference was immediately noticeable!

Reading

I want to tell you a bit about my grandson Jordan and what the Hearit has done for him.

Jordan is an 11 year old boy with ADD. Three years ago, we moved Jordan out of a large city school, because they were going to put him in third grade and he could not read or write and had behavior problems.

We placed him in a small county school and 1st grade. We also sent him to Gail Cattaur in Seward, NE. who is an educational specialist. She recommended that we try the Hearit. Jordan's teacher tells us that Jordan is calmer when he wears the Hearit. He likes to weare the Hearit because it sorts out what he needs to hear.

Jordan is now in third grade and according to a letter we received from his teacher, is reading at the 4.5 grade equivalency based on national norms. He is no longer a behavioral problem. Although he still has some difficulty, we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel we owe a large part of his improvement to the Hearit.

Reading Problems/ Auditory Perception

The Hearit is the best tool I've used, other than working directly with a Language Pathologist, in remediating reading problems in children. The Hearit makes it possible to distinguish many confusing medial and final sounds as well as to become aware of sounds.

My most dramatic success story involves a 6 1/2 year old girl who came to me in the middle of 1st grade. Mandy had limited and immature speech patterns. Neither her kindergarten teacher nor her first grade teacher had been able to help her, even with one-on-one tutoring.

I used the Hearit with Mandy twice a week at 45 minute sessions for six months along with ARL training. Today, over a year later, Mandy is reading and blending/sounding words. Her speech patterns are now normal for a second grader. Using this tool helped open up an auditory world for Mandy.

With older students being able to distinguish different sounds and identifying syllables has made not only reading, but spelling must easier.

All remedial teachers should employ a Hearit. I love it!

Edwina Hatch, Teacher/Tutor, Tucson Educational Services, Tucson, Arizona

Have just received our third Hearit, and we put it to immediate use. We have found Hearit to be excellent technology to use in our Auditory Processing training program. It is also valuable for students who are learning to read, but have an auditory processing disability.

2/4/97 Voice, Stuttering, Articulation, Language, Noise Control

The Hearit has been successfully used in voice, stuttering, articulation, and language therapy.

I am using the Hearit with an Inclusion student who is mentally retarded, as a means to lower his voice. It has been very effective and his classmates and teachers have noticed a difference. He has progressed nicely and only needs to wear it for a few classes to lower his volume to an acceptable level when he speaks too loud.

The Hearit has made [a] world of difference in adolescent articulation therapy. My students come to me with years of therapy unable to truly hear their own production and analyze their accuracy independently. The Hearit has made the tape recorder obsolete in our sessions. The students, for the first time, are able to hear themselves as others do (with exceptional quality) and make sound judgements about their speech. The Hearit has been an invaluable tool at this stage in articulation therapy for my students.

Many of my students use the Hearit when they practice oral presentations to have an idea of their rate and general sound of their presentations. Most students hate the device initially, because "it sounds wierd." They don't believe they sound the way they sound. They soon adjust and use the Hearit with delight to do monthly poetry recitations, oral book reports, and weekly current events reports.

A severe stutterer is using the Hearit device as a means to build awareness to the extraneous sounds that he makes. Many of the students use the Hearit when they are doing final practice presentations.

I wish every teacher and every student could experience the benefits of the Hearit device.

ESL-BIL

6/6/97 Pronunciation, Intonation, Articulation, Target Sounds

I have found that my new Hearit device is helping not only my individual learning disabled students with distinguishing phonemes, but it is also helping my developmental course ESL students with their pronunciation of sounds that are not part of their native language.
I have used the Hearit to assist these non-native speakers with particular features of articulation of consonants, or the length of a vowel that makes and English work carry content meaning. Students found it surprisingly helpful for reading back the haiku poetry they had created; they made more artistic and sophisticated editing choices, based on their own experience of their voices approaching the target English sounds they felt were inherent to the haiku medium of specified syllable structure (three lines with five, seven, and five syllables, respectively).
Even with more advanced students, the Hearit provides focused, mini-instruction within the group as students can directly experience the amplification of my speech. Obviously, I am anxious for the release of the "broadcasting system" on your drawing table, to serve more students at one time.
Thank you for introducing me to this state-of-the-art tool for helping my students achieve proficiency in English.
